Shannon Sauter

Family Medicine Faculty Physician

Bismarck

Dr. Sauter began her journey with the UND Center for Family Medicine in 2013 as a first-year resident. She joined the teaching faculty in 2016 and became Program Director in 2023. Though she lived across the U.S. on several Army bases during childhood, she has proudly called Bismarck home for the past 25 years.

She chose Family Medicine because, as a medical student, she couldn’t pick just one favorite rotation—she loved caring for children, providing prenatal care, performing minor procedures, and managing chronic conditions. The variety and diversity of Family Medicine offered the perfect blend of all these interests.

One of Dr. Sauter’s favorite aspects of patient care is treating multiple members of the same family, allowing her to build deep, lasting relationships. She also finds great motivation in teaching and mentoring the next generation of Family Medicine physicians.

Outside of work, Dr. Sauter enjoys crochet and knitting, playing sand volleyball, learning new games with her husband and children (the latest favorite is pickleball!), and traveling.

Fun fact: In high school, she played multiple instruments—including French horn, clarinet, tenor and soprano saxophone, and flute!
