Poonam Poonam
Bismarck
Dr. Poonam is a first-year resident at the UND Center for Family Medicine. She joined the program in 2025 and hailed from Toronto. She is drawn to family medicine because she loves caring for people at every stage of life — from babies to grandparents. She really enjoys the continuity of getting to know her patients and their families over time, being part of their lives beyond just a single visit.
She chose the UND Bismarck/Hettinger program for the unique chance to experience both urban and rural settings. This allows her to see a wide variety of patients and conditions, giving her a broad perspective and helping her grow into a well-rounded physician. One of her favorite parts of patient care is connecting with people in meaningful ways, educating them in a fun and approachable manner, and building long-term relationships — all with the guidance of supportive and encouraging faculty.
Outside of work, Dr. Poonam enjoys sketching cartoons, taking nature walks, watching horror movies, and cooking. After a long shift, her go-to comfort food is a chocolate almond croissant.
Fun fact: She loves collecting a shot glass from every country she visits — a small but special reminder of each adventure.
